Spinal Cord Injuries

by admin on March 20, 2012 in Personal Injury

Spinal cord injuries occur to more than 11,000 people each year in the United States, with many experiencing severe chronic pain, paralysis and death.

Spinal cord injuries normally occur from trauma, which is a sudden blow or impact to the spine that fractures or dislocates vertebrae.

Forty-seven percent of all spinal cord injuries occur in auto accidents.

Other incidents which account for a large number of spinal cord injuries are falls, violence, and sports.

Spinal cord injuries are many times the fault of another party such as: the driver of a car or truck, a defective product, or a hazardous property.

Spinal cord injuries can result in loss of sensation and movement, including paralysis of all four limbs, or quadriplegia, and paralysis of the lower half of the body, paraplegia.

Other health problems include bladder and bowel complications, inability to regulate blood pressure, reduced control of body temperature, chronic pain and increased susceptibility to respiratory disease.
